Its original Spanish title is El laberinto del fauno, which refers to the faun of Roman mythology; the English title refers to the faun-like Greek god Pan, though the faun in the film never goes by this name.

In the United States and Canada, it was given a limited release on December 29, 2006, with the nationwide release on January 19, 2007.
