Movie Info: Letters from Iwo Jima (formerly titled Red Sun, Black Sand) is a 2006 Golden Globe-winning war film directed by Clint Eastwood. It was released in Japan on December 9, 2006 and in limited release in the United States on December 20 (the latter in order to compete for an Academy Award). The movie was released in more area on January 12, and will be released in most states by January 19. It was based on the books Picture Letters from Commander in Chief by Gen Tadamichi Kuribayashi who is portrayed on screen by Ken Watanabe and Sadness in Dying Gracefully by Kumiko Kakehashi. It is a complementary film to Eastwood's Flags of Our Fathers.
